  Cajamarca

BEAUTIFUL COUNTRYSIDE, THERMAL SPRINGS AND COLONIAL MANSIONS.

For all Peruvians Cajamarca is synonymous for beautiful countryside. It’s an image of fertile earth and beneficent nature. The so called ‘stable of the north’ is a low height mountain range with a very pleasant climate. The city lies north-east from Trujillo, and 856 km from Lima. A stay in Cajamarca is the perfect way to relax and to walk.

Considered to be the cradle of the Peruvian identity – having produced here the historical encounter between the Spanish conquerors and the Inca civilization, starting with the execution of the last Inca, Atahualpa, at the main square, in 1533, Cajamarca became the fort of the army of the conquest.

cajamarca

The luxurious finish of its colonial constructions makes this city the most Spanish of all Peruvian cities, conserved almost intact through the time. Many of the oldest mansions in Cajamarca show stone porticos with singular carvings, wide alleys that lead to colourful and cheerful patios that traditionally hide a florid garden.

In the vicinity of the city lies Ventanillas de Otuzco, burial place of the Cajamarca culture. The much extended sepulchral form within the whole territory consisted of accommodating the deceased’s in niches which were digged out in the rocks; in some cases in the slopes of ravines. In an idyllic landscape, 6 km to the southeast of Cajamarca, lie the springs of thermal and medicinal waters denominated ‘Baños Del Inca ', place where Inca Atahualpa reposed when he was surprised by the Spanish invaders four centuries ago. Today this source of thermal-medicinal waters is considered to be one of the most important of the northern area of the country.
Cajamarca results very strategic being an area that unites the three natural regions: coast, mountain and cloud forest. For the traveller, this becomes the ideal starting point to travel along the so called north eastern route, covered by dozens of pre-Inca sites such as the enigmatic city-fortress of Kuelap (see ‘Kuelap '), hidden inside the cloud forests.

From Cajamarca you can travel to the Trujillo , Kuelap or Chiclayo.
