  Cuzco

CRADLE OF THE INCA CULTURE

Cusco became a living legend, only comparable to the Eastern cities mentioned in the tales of the Arabian Nights. Ever the navel of the world, Cusco was the centre of the Inca Nation. Four roads led from Cusco’s main square to the four corners of the Inca Empire that lay between of what is today south Colombia and mid Chile. Concerning its size the ‘Land of the Inca’s was as vast as the Roman Empire. The Inca Nation was connected by a road network stretching over 30.000 km Nowadays Cusco, situated 3300 m above sea level, is a colourful and lively city that radiates the charm of its rich historical past.

The old city quarter is a strange combination between Inca- and colonial architecture. The Spaniards couldn’t tear down the massive Inca walls, so they decided to build their own buildings on top of the original walls. These massive walls, which now make magnificent combination with the graceful architecture added by the Spaniards. Due to that special combination, the city radiates a unique character. Cusco’s winding cobbled streets, full of churches, temples and mansions makes this a splendid destination out of this, full of culture and history.

cusco

The ruins of Sacsayhuaman rule the hills around the old Inca capital. This temple complex is an extraordinary example of the knowledge of the old Inca architects. The massive walls were run up out of boulders, the heariest one weighs 300 ton. The surrounding countryside is stunning, much of it covered with staggered terraces.

A stay in Urubamba, the Sacred Valley, is the best way to relax and to explore the surrounding territory. Cusco is also the starting-point for visits to the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, which can be reached by train or Inca Trail.
