Lima, City of Kings
BUBBLING MULTICULTURAL SOCIETY SURROUNDED BY COLONIAL SPLENDOUR.
The very well preserved old part of the city dotted with colonial churches and mansions, and the modern districts of Miraflores, San Isidro and Surco makes Lima one of the most fascinating cities in South America. It’s a modern city that maintains excellent connections with the other parts of the world. Almost nine million people live in the capital of Peru, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Founded in 1535 on Epiphany day by the Spanish conqueror Francisco Pizarro, during 300 years Lima was the most important city in South America.
Traditionally the old city basks around de main square. Vestiges of Lima’s colonial heydays are the Government Palace, the City Hall, and the Cathedral where the bones of Pizarro rest. A little further lies Torre Tagle, a palace that was finished in 1735. Here one gets a good impression of the wealth of Lima during the flourishing-period of the colonialism.

Of all religious buildings gathered over the old part of the city, the San Francisco monastery with its catacombs is the show-piece of colonial Lima.
Popular in modern Lima are Miraflores and San Isidro, suburbs with interesting shops, good restaurants, bars and theatres.
Barranco, a beautiful quarter with colonial and 19th centuries old mansions, is the centre of the town’s nightlife.
