Huaraz and the White Mountain Range
SNOW, MOUNTAINS, A TREKKER’S PARADISE
At 400 km northeast of Lima lies the highest chain of snow-covered peaks in the highlands. The region is easily reached by road from Lima, and takes about seven hours.
In view of the great diversity and the many mountaintops the Cordillera Blanca is a trekkers dream. Huaraz, the centre of all walking activities, lies in the Callejon de Huaylas, a valley stretched out over a longitude of 160 km.
The valley is known as one of the most beautiful areas in South-America owing to its splendid panoramic views and its multitude of possibilities of open air activities. The valley is very popular with sportsmanlike lovers of nature who come here to walk, climb, snowboard and ski; while other visitors prefer to relax in a spectacular landscape.
In the middle of the Cordillera Blanca lies the 6768 m high Huascarán, the highest mountain in Peru, while the Alpamayo, with its 5945 m, is considered by many as the most beautiful mountain in the world.

Many lakes are spread out over the high plateau, such as the LLanganuco Lake with its deep blue waters.
A great part of the Cordillera Blanca and the area that surrounds the Huascarán mountain range are part of the national park Huascarán. Among the wildlife and the many species of plants is the Puya Raimondi, member of the bromelias. In full bloom, this botanical jewel can grow 10 m high.
After a hundred years the Puya bears between 15.000 and 20.000 flowers. On the eastern slopes of the Cordillera Blanca, and easily reached by road from Huaraz, lies the temple complex of Chavín de Huantar, build by one of the most influential cultures of the Andes. Inside the temple is a subterranean labyrinth of passages and galleries, spread over several floors.
From Huaraz you can continue your trip to Trujillo or Lima.
