Yquitos and Pacaya Samiria
GATEWAY TO THE MIGHTY AMAZONE, THE WORLD’S LAST AND LARGEST GREEN LUNG
Iquitos is the biggest Peruvian city in the jungle and lies on the left bank of the Amazon. The city can be reached only via the Amazon or by plain. It’s the starting-point for boat trips to the surrounding wilderness and cruises down the Amazon to protected areas in Peru, Brazil and Columbia. The Amazon and its tributaries are the only lifeline in the region.
Since the city is situated so far from the Andean mountain range and 3000 km from the river-mouth and the ocean, huge parts of the rainforest are still virgin. Consequently this by jungle vegetation surrounded area possesses an enormous biodiversity. The jungle lodges along the tributaries are the most ideal starting-points to make a quick and directly acquaintance with the wilderness and wild animals. An experience is a suspended bridge spanning over 500 meters, connected by tree platforms reaching a height of over 35 meters above the ground.
This very special walkway offers breathtaking views and the possibility to observe all sorts of exotic birds from a very unique perspective. From here one can observe a part of the top of the rainforest rarely seen by man but easy accessible. This with epiphytes overgrown maze of crowns constitutes the habitat of the sloth. Close to the soil of the wilderness, leafs are very big, and sunshine gets hardly through. However the all-dominating sound of insects is deafening.

This green dense vegetation constitutes the territory of small Indian communities who live according to old traditions which they have been able to maintain for centuries. From Iquitos a three hour journey by boat through the Amazon and Marañon rivers leads to the largest protected natural area in Peru, the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, a lowland jungle area full of wild animals.
The reserve is also known as the “Jungle of the Mirrors” due to the fact that the jungle and the sky are reflected so clearly in the dark waters of its rivers, that visitors have the sensation of navigating throughout endless mirrors of water. Here one can observe the exotic pink dolphin of the Amazon in its natural habitat, the giant river otter, the black alligator and the longest ophidian in the world, the anaconda
